This paper summarizes results from a survey of male youth experience at the Boksburg Youth Correctional Centre (BYC) in Johannesburg, South Africa. It examines the youth, their reported views and experiences of life in the facility, and issues related to HIV and AIDS, sexuality and gender. The author interviewed young men on their experiences of violence, sex and sexual violence in prison as well as on general personal features and situations in the institution. The paper concludes that prison experiences fundamentally influence youth understandings of sex and sexuality and impacts psychological and social development.
