This paper provides an overview the relationship between ex-combatants and violence in the southern African region. It compares and explores the processes of demobilization, demilitarization, reintegration and rehabilitation; issues of identity and trauma; and the role of weapons in promoting violence in transitional societies. The author links gaps in disarmament, demobilization and reintegration with ex-combatants involved in violent activities.
