This paper examines what is known about the number of deaths due to police force or violence in post-apartheid South Africa. The author attempts to compare pre- and post-apartheid statistics, focusing on the 'death in custody' and 'death in detention' statistics. The paper concludes that there are reasons to doubt the reliability of information on killings by police from the apartheid period.
