This report provides an overview of a conference that focused on South Africa's experience in post-apartheid, restorative justice. It examines whether post-Truth and Reconciliation Commission initiatives were explicitly labeled as restorative justice. It then situates restorative justice within crime control and crime prevention. The third section looks at the process of the institutionalization of restorative justice in the formal justice system. The report draws on regional and international cases and concludes with lessons to reconcile justice and reconciliation models.
