This report focuses on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to provide an overview of police brutality following the transition to democracy in 1994. The author uses numerous cases to demonstrate that police brutality is not restricted to torture and includes other interrelated problems. The report begins with definitions of police brutality and its distinction from corruption. The author highlights root causes and variables that impact police brutality occurrences.
