This handbook aligns policing with democratic principles in South Africa and reflects on key questions surrounding their role and accountability. The authors discuss the role of oversight and the use of indicators in assessing policing. They identify five key areas of concern relevant to evaluating police agencies and provide measures to evaluate police performance in relation to these five areas. The handbook concludes with suggestions to improve indicators of democratic policing in South Africa.
