This paper argues that to make prisons compatible with South Africa's constitutional democracy, four requirements need to be met. The author discusses each of the requirements, focusing on the need for compatibility with a constitutional democracy and highlighting obstacles to creating a prison system that meets such requirements. The author emphasizes that prison systems must change and so must analysis of them.
