This report discusses the relationship between violence and democratic transition in South Africa. It links the ways in which violence is addressed, i.e. systems of justice, to the way society understands democracy and reconciliation. The authors argue that, while the past impacts present forms of violence, new trends, targets and perpetrators have also emerged in South Africa’s democratic era.
