This booklet explores means of preventing and combating torture in post-apartheid South Africa. It discusses challenges and outlines South Africa’s obligations under the Convention against Torture (CAT) and the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT). The author argues that South Africa must implement effective legal measures, investigate all allegations of torture, and prosecute perpetrators without exception. He highlights the need to educate and train officials about their duties, and educate people about the right not to be tortured. The booklet concludes with recommendations to monitor places of detention.
