This report examines international and domestic mechanisms to address and prevent torture and cruel or degrading punishment in South Africa. It begins with an overview of the UN Convention against Torture and highlights the political importance of addressing such incidents. It then looks at the role of international law and domestic mechanisms to prevent torture and cruel punishment. The report concludes with recommendations and examples of preventive mechanisms to address torture.
