This paper focuses on the challenges faced by South Africa in its efforts to build sustainable reconciliation after the operations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The author argues against describing South Africa as a 'post-conflict' society in the wake of the TRC. The paper analyzes the limitations of the TRC as a restorative justice mechanism, given its historical imperative and mandate to deal with the issues of violence and reconciliation in relation to narrowly defined political responsibility.
