This paper gives an overview of the nature of violence in South Africa and is an executive summary of a larger report. It explores the reasons behind the prevalence of violent crime, and distinguishes between high incidents of 'acquaintance violence' as well as violence in criminal incidents. The paper concludes with recommendations for criminal justice responses to violent crime and violence prevention measures.
