This report explores the challenges facing the East Sudan Peace Agreement (ESPA), between the government of Sudan and the Eastern Front (EF). The authors focus on the re-inclusion of Gedaref State and its implications for future politics in the region, based on interviews with government officials and civil society activists. The report begins with background information on Eastern Sudan and the Gedaref State. Next, the authors discuss the main elements and provisions of the ESPA. The report concludes with a discussion of the problems and challenges facing the Agreement.
