This report explores Africa's global and strategic importance as reasons behind the creation of AFRICOM, a US unified command focused on conflict prevention. The author argues that security and stability in Africa depends on good governance, the rule of law and economic opportunity. She explores AFRICOM and highlights the challenges and criticism surrounding its creation. The report concludes that AFRICOM will be a key supporting organization in the implementation of US foreign policy as articulated by the secretary of state.
