This piece traces the recent efforts by Saudi Arabia and Iran to reduce the geopolitical and religious-ideological tensions that exist between them. The reasons for this tentative and wary rapprochement include the Trump administration’s still ambiguous policies towards both nations and Russia’s increasing involvement in the Middle East. But will this cautious turnaround help surmount the systemic differences that still remain between Saudi Arabia and Iran? The paper’s authors have their doubts.
