This publication argues that the Western Balkans has failed to tap the potential of its vast diaspora – six million strong – around the world. In response, the text’s author explores how Ireland faced a similar experience regarding emigration, but prospered from it. She suggests that to follow in Ireland's footsteps, the Western Balkans states urgently need to gather data in order to understand its diaspora population and communicate with it effectively. Further, the EU could also support these efforts by introducing programs that help Western Balkans citizens living in EU member states to contribute more to their home countries if they return.
