This report contemplates how East Asian nations perceive the UN and what dictates their investments in and contributions to the world body’s peace and security efforts. As the text’s authors see it, over the past decade East Asian countries have shown 1) an increased appreciation of the UN as a forum through which they can pursue their interests; 2) a growing readiness to contribute to peacekeeping activities; 3) a progressive desire to institutionalize UN-ASEAN secretariat-to-secretariat cooperation; 4) an interest in deepening disaster response cooperation; and 5) a declining resistance to engaging in discussions about human rights and the Responsibility to Protect.
