It has been six years since the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi, yet the future of Libya still remains unclear. In response, this article outlines the complex nature of the situation in the country and posits three main conclusions pertaining to the activities of external actors: 1) the success of international intervention efforts in Libya are often mitigated by an inability to achieve apolitical status; 2) short-term thinking on behalf of international actors does not adequately address the root causes of conflict in the country; and 3) international actors often support different groups within the country, leading to infighting and a reduction in the capacity for cooperation between groups.
