What are the responsibilities of social media? To whom should it be accountable? This publication argues for the creation of a new legal category to answer these questions, one that would provide clear definitions and a firm delineation of platforms’ rights and responsibilities. For instance, the text’s author outlines that social media companies should not become responsible for third-party content due to implications regarding censorship, but they should have the obligation to create and maintain safe and secure platforms that respect human rights and the rule of law. Before setting out its recommendations, the paper looks at the similarities and differences between traditional and social media.
