In the lead up to the May 2019 European Parliament election, this publication explores five ideas about the shape of European politics which the text’s authors claim are dominating public debate, even though they are not true. These five myths are 1) that Europe’s politics are becoming more tribal; 2) that the election will be a clash between those who believe in Europe and those who believe in the nation state; 3) the May vote will be a referendum on migration; 4) the dividing line in Europe is between east and west; and 5) European elections are truly national votes.
