How has India dealt with its Naxalite insurgency? In this text, Thomas Lynch explains 1) why the rebellion became India’s most significant internal security challenge from 2007 to 2010; 2) how New Delhi effectively managed to contain the insurgency by 2014; 3) what kinds of bilateral security assistance the US offered India during these years; and 4) why New Delhi remains unenthusiastic about partnering with outside actors in its counterinsurgency fights. Lynch concludes his analysis by highlighting the principles policymakers should remember when working with India in counterinsurgency operations.
