This paper examines how the multilateral world has evolved over the last 150 years and the situation today. More specifically, after providing a more general historical overview, the text's authors examine 1) existing multilateral organizations that encourage universal membership, such as the UN, the World Bank Group, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Trade Organization (WTO); 2) regional groupings such as the EU, ASEAN and the African Union, and 3) cross-cutting multilateral or plurilateral groupings with more limited, generally consultative purposes, such as the G7, the G20 and the BRICS grouping.
