This brief looks at the state of US-UN relations following the election of Donald Trump and advises Secretary-General Guterres on how to ensure the relationship moves forward. Given the current impediments to enhanced US-UN cooperation, which include Washington’s monetary contributions to the world body and anti-Israel UN resolutions, the text’s author advises Guterres to 1) emphasize the mutual dependence of both actors; 2) delay UN actions against Israeli settlements; 3) push for internal institutional reforms; and 4) engage directly with the US Congress.
