Nonviolent resistance has been a surprisingly effective method of political change and its use has spread around the world. This brief highlights some of the recent developments in this form of defiance, including a puzzling and sudden decline in the effectiveness of nonviolent resistance since 2010, and the surprising lack of state support for such campaigns.
