This paper assesses 1) the most important impediments to Myanmar’s democratic transition, which are ethnic unrest and economic hardship; 2) how the new government is planning to address these problems; and 3) the influence of the Tatmadaw (the military) in the country’s politics. The text’s author also discusses the changes in Myanmar’s relations with the major global powers since Aung San Suu Kyi assumed power.
