This brief focuses on how to strengthen the fight against the illegal wildlife trade by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora's (CITES). The text’s author specifically discusses 1) the existing framework under which CITES operates; 2) the tighter working relationship the Convention needs to have with a range of intergovernmental agencies; 3) why CITES should promote greater trans-regional consensus among African countries on wildlife issues; and 4) the existing requirements for biodiversity scientists and specialists in Africa.
