This publication reflects on Turkey’s October 2019 ground incursion into northern Syria in order to disrupt Kurdish paramilitary forces in the area. More specifically, the text’s author addresses 1) Turkey’s reasons for carrying out the offensive; 2) Syrian Kurdish fighters’ expectations of reward given their role in the fight against the so-called Islamic State and how these went unfulfilled; 3) what this and Turkey’s incursion may mean for the situation in Syria, and more.
