This brief examines the role that’s been played by the African Union (AU) in facilitating the Central African Republic’s (CAR) peacebuilding, post-conflict reconstruction and development processes. The text’s authors conclude that 1) the AU has been effective in bringing stakeholders together to support peacebuilding; 2) the organization can improve its impact in the CAR by further clarifying its mandate on post-conflict reconstruction and development; 3) there is an increase in the AU’s interest in the CAR, which could inspire greater links between the organization's activities in the country and other AU initiatives; and 4) there are opportunities for the AU and other stakeholders to improve their peacebuilding activities within the CAR.
