The number of protests demanding better employment opportunities and living conditions in Tunisia has increased sharply since 2015. This case study clarifies the socioeconomic motives behind the protests and why civil society actors have been unable to mediate between the politicians and protestors. To avoid further tensions, the text’s authors believe the Tunisian government should embrace more inclusive decision-making processes and recruiting practices, especially those that will help curb clientelist hiring practices.
