This report explores the problems and opportunities represented by 3D printing, otherwise known as additive manufacturing. After reviewing the basics of this technology and how it’s currently being applied, the text’s author then analyzes the possible risks of additive manufacturing, particularly in relation to the proliferation of small weapons, major weapons systems, and even weapons of mass destruction. To minimize these risks, the author calls for the creation of safeguards, export controls, cyber security, awareness raising campaigns, and industry self-regulation.
