This paper discusses the importance of dealing with deep human trauma by 1) consulting the writings of individuals such as Simon Wiesenthal and Hannah Arendt, and 2) in the particular case of South Africa, applying their insights to the ongoing work of the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In particular, the text’s author explores how to create “moral spaces” that facilitate an understanding of the “worthiness” of others that did not exist before.
