What defines peace? This article grapples with the concept while providing examples of what it looks like at the national and transnational levels. In the first case, you might argue that peace is 1) an explicit and deliberate policy objective for all states, not just those affected by conflict; 2) an ongoing and self-sustaining process; 3) a multi-sectoral, endogenous process that is the shared responsibility of nations and citizens; and 4) something that deserves attention at the highest levels of national government. In the second case, the text’s authors outline what peace officially means to the UN, and within the context of international interventions.
