This report provides a brief political and conflict history of the southern third of South Sudan, otherwise known as the Equatoria. More specifically, it clarifies 1) the stresses the recent civil war has put on the region; 2) the open rebellion that exists in parts of Western Equatoria; 3) the relationship between these conflicts and the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (ARCSS); and 4) the prospects for peace under the current transitional government.
