This paper investigates the ongoing international security intervention in Niger, which is a key component of the West’s strategy against global jihad. More specifically, the text’s authors 1) analyze the particular security challenges Niger faces in a post-Gaddafi regional environment, with a special focus on the Diffa area; 2) elaborate on the interdependency between external and internal actors within the country; 3) outline the interlinked stabilization policies being pursued by France and the EU in Niger; 4) reflect on the counterproductive effects of narrowly defining security in counterterrorism operations; and 5) consider the possibility of formal actors collaborating more fully with their non-state counterparts.
