This monograph clarifies how those most affected by Boko Haram – i.e., Nigerian citizens themselves - view the terrorist group and the insecurity it creates. While exploring this overarching theme, the text’s authors also focus on 1) citizen-state relations in Nigeria and the political context in which Boko Haram operates; 2) how legitimate the country’s security forces are in the eyes of the people; 3) Nigeria’s broader security environment and what role it plays in inspiring people to join Boko Haram; 4) how the terrorist group is financed; and 5) what Nigerian citizens think should be done to combat it.
