This paper examines the fallout over UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon’s controversial reference to Morocco’s control over the Western Sahara as an “occupation.” In addition to providing a detailed history of the region and the quest to solve the “who owns it?” problem, the paper analyzes the swift and sweeping response of the Moroccan government to Ban Ki-Moon’s statement and its implications for future UN-Moroccan relations.
