This analysis argues that Russia’s announcement in early 2016 that it would provide significant amounts of equipment and ordnance to Fiji confirms that the traditional security order in the Pacific Islands region is changing. In response, Australia and New Zealand should rebuild their defense ties with the island nation by 1) establishing a regional center of excellence for peacekeeping; 2) creating a Pacific disaster response and coordination unit, and 3) engaging more intensely with Fiji in regional defense forums.
