In April 2015, an al-Shabaab attack on Kenya´s Garissa University College left 148 people dead. This paper provides an insight into the context behind the April events and their aftermath by reviewing 1) Garissa´s historic divisions; 2) the violence that led up to the attack; and 3) how local actors and the government have worked together to improve security in the county since 2015. The text´s authors conclude by warning that while violence has decreased in Graissa since the attack, the divisions that could undermine the county´s tentative peace remain.
