This backgrounder elucidates the composition and behavior of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which the US created in late 2015 to fight alongside the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and other local militias against the so-called Islamic State. As part of its analysis, the text identifies some of the largest and most influential groups now operating within the SDF.
