This monograph examines how the command level of the South African Police Service behaved prior to the killing of 34 miners on 16 August 2012 in Marikana. More specifically, the text’s author 1) contextualizes the miner’s strike that was in full swing at the time; 2) outlines the shifting positions of the police as the strike progressed, to include its planning processes and negotiating tactics; and 3) ponders whether two senior police commanders exercised their authority properly just prior to the killings.
