This publication looks at the protests in Kazakhstan, which began in September 2019, against the increasing influence of China in the country. More specifically, the text’s author addresses 1) the similarities between these protests and previous ones against land sales to foreign investors, particularly China, in 2016; 2) how protesters in Kazakhstan use China to voice frustrations with their own government without directly challenging it; 3) the difficulties the protests create for the Kazakh government both regarding its relations with it own citizens and China, and more.
