This article argues that illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a threat to US national security due to the negative impact it has on individuals, communities, economies, institutions and governments around the world. The authors also set out recommendations for a whole-of-government strategy that the US government and other foreign partners can adopt to curb the effect of IUU fishing, including that Washington and others should 1) encourage countries to ratify, implement, and enforce the Port State Measures Agreement; 2) advocate comprehensive foreign domestic fisheries regulations and catch reporting requirements; 3) work to increase the transparency of the fishing industry, and more.
