This text emphasizes the importance of gender mainstreaming in peace support operations and offers a number of suggestions on how to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325 at the local level. More specifically, the text’s authors 1) identify existing gender gaps that exist in the peacekeeping environment of the Great Lakes Region, and 2) examine the threat of sexual violence encountered by women in the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In order to address these problems effectively, the authors advocate greater funding, the enhanced protection for women and girls in areas of armed conflict, and stronger support for policy processes that are linked to UNSCR 1325.
