As EU members continue to deliberate over changes to the Common European Asylum System, this bulletin examines two potential solutions raised by the EC and the Visegrad Group (V4). While the EC proposal aims to automatically redistribute asylum seekers among member states, the V4’s counterproposal vehemently rejects this particular provision. Given this red line, it’s obvious that a compromise solution will have to strike a balance between the principles of ‘first safe country’ and international solidarity.
