This brief analyzes why self-determination movements between 1960 and 2005 employed different nonviolent strategies to achieve their aims. It concludes that resource requirements, the ‘diffusion’ phenomenon, and a desire for diversity were some of the prime movers behind the various choices that self-determination advocates made.
