The articles in this issue focus on 1) the so-called Islamic State’s (IS) internal struggles over defining its ideology during the period 2014 to 2019; 2) how IS’s Directorate of General Security (DGS) has come to oversee and manage an increasingly wide array of the group’s insurgent activities; 3) why IS has failed to gain significant traction in Yemen despite conditions on the ground that appeared to be conducive to its expansion; 4) the relationship of IS' 'core' group with jihadists on the peripheries, including Boko Haram in Nigeria and Abu Sayyaf and Maute Group in the Philippines, and much more.
