This backgrounder reviews the US’ refugee system. More specifically, it explores 1) the country’s definition of a refugee; 2) how refugees are screened and approved for entry; 3) how many of them are allowed into the US and from which nations; 4) what government agencies are involved in the refugee resettlement process and where the new arrivals are resettled; and 5) whether refugee populations have posed security risks to the US in the past.
