The long-term future of oil demand remains a perennial uncertainty. But in thinking that 'peak oil' may just be over the horizon, certain oil producing nations have given their sovereign wealth funds a mandate to further economic diversification. To illustrate what this means, this publication presents case studies on the Kuwait Investment Authority, the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Mubadala Investment Company, the Qatar Investment Authority and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The text's author also examines the case of Singapore’s Temasek as an analytic counterpoint. Throughout, she argues for increased transparency metrics and measures in governance to help sovereign investors build partnerships in other industries and reduce nations’ reliance on oil.
