This report looks at the environmental impact of peace operations and how the UN has responded to this issue, including through policies and guidelines, dedicated staff and training material. In particular, it assesses the challenges the UN Department of Field Support faces in implementing its environment strategy. The piece also includes 1) a case study on the environmental problems that confront the UN mission in Mali; and 2) eight recommendations on how to help ensure UN peacekeeping missions do not become a source of stress on local environmental sustainability.
