This publication looks at trade in counterfeit and black-market pharmaceuticals in Central America. After providing a global and regional overview of the illicit sale of pharmaceuticals, the text’s author examines Guatemala and Costa Rica as case studies to analyze 1) the scale and scope of the problem; 2) the strategy of the actors involved in counterfeit and black-market pharmaceutical trafficking; 3) current and future trends in the market, and 4) government and private sector responses to the problem. The report concludes with recommendations for stakeholders, and potential opportunities for more effective interventions going forward.
